There are a number of tests that are
used to assess memory loss. The most widely used are the Mini-Mental
Status Examination (MMSE) and the digit symbol substitution test.
These tests help assess short and long term memory, spatial
abilities, mental processing speed and many other related cognitive
abilities. The testing includes having subjects recall their date and
country of birth, counting from 1 to 5, and then backwards again,
naming a specific body part such as an arm or a leg, to recall
objects that were shown previously and to follow simple directions,
such as folding a piece of paper in half.
A CAT scan of the brain can also show
normal and problem areas of the brain.
